In southern Thailand, the scenery includes impressive rock formations and huge coral reefs of the Similan Islands, one of Thailand’s Marine National Parks, located in the Andaman Sea. The Andaman, with Phuket Island at its hub, contains hundreds of islands with white sand beaches and idyllic fishing villages. And, the Andaman and Similan Islands are considered one of the world’s hottest fishing and scuba diving destinations. Indonesia’s eastern archipelago contains not hundreds, but thousands of small, undisturbed islands, and is the largest archipelago in the world. The climate here is mostly dry, but with a rainy season from December to February, while the southern isthmus of Thailand is always hot and humid. The Mergui Archipelago in Burma also contains hundreds of tropical islands scattered over an area of ten thousand square miles, while Peninsular Malaysia has forested mountain ranges and low-lying coastal plains, and tranquil beaches backed by dense jungle. And, in the Indian Ocean, positioned near the equator, are a series of low-lying coral islands called the Maldives. These islands are very popular with international tourists who enjoy their soft sand beaches, turquoise waters and coral reefs teaming with an abundance of marine flora and fauna.
